SUMMER CLASSES
Every summer, Brentwood Oaks offers classes with various topics for adults in all stages of life. Please read the descriptions and then fill out the form below to choose a class for this first summer session. Here are the classes for Summer 2024:
Summer session 2 - July 14 - august 18
Daniel: “All Quiet in Heaven, All Chaos on Earth” - Mark Shipp
Daniel has been a challenging book, for ancient as well as modern readers. Not only is it written in two different languages, it is also written in two very different styles of literature. But in spite of its challenges and its diverse interpretations, one fact remains critical for all who read the book: Daniel tells the story of the persecution of God’s people, but also sounds forth the assurance of God’s control over the forces of chaos on earth and the ultimate triumph of the people of God.
Ministering to Aging Parents – Scott Click and Mel Witcher
The pivot point of the Ten Commandments (linking our response to God to our responsibilities for other people) is this command: “Honor your father and your mother” (Exodus 20:12, Deuteronomy 5:16). In this class we will consider what it means to honor our aging parents through presentations by some who have gone (or are going) through this challenge and class discussions on issues such as finances, transportation, housing, and other topics.
On Earth as it is in Heaven” - Rethinking Heaven, the Resurrection, and the Mission of the Church - Anna Wiles and Reagan Ward
Join us for an enriching 6-week Bible class based on N.T. Wright's book, "Surprised by Hope." Delve into a profound exploration of Christian hope, resurrection, and the ultimate promise of new creation. Together, we'll unpack Wright's compelling vision of what the future holds, challenging common misconceptions about heaven and the afterlife. Through guided discussions, in-depth readings, and reflective exercises, we'll discover how this vibrant hope reshapes our present lives and mission as followers of Christ. NOTE: Please be aware that this class involves a deep exploration of beliefs about the afterlife and may include challenging and thought-provoking content. For those who are actively grieving the loss of a loved one, some discussions and topics may be emotionally difficult. We encourage you to take care of your emotional well-being and consider whether this class is the right fit for you at this time.
Book Club: Why You Think The Way You Do: The Story of Western Worldviews From Rome to Home by Glenn Sunshine – Woody Woodrow
